There are a few different options to set for any incoming external URL Item type orders.
Convert to Print job - when the item is received the platform will take any external artwork provided and use this to generate a print job based on the print settings on the linked Catalog product.
Process Images - This option takes the image URLs passed to us, downloads them and processes them using the same method that we would use for an image uploaded into a smartlink by a user. The key reason for doing this is that it ensures that we have both a fullsize and a preview version of the image. The preview image is what is used when loading the print job in a smartlink. Normally an external URL item will have a fullsize and thumbnail version (note that thumbnail and preview are not the same thing) . Neither the fullsize or thumbnail images are really suitable for use in a smartlink (fullsize could be many MBs and thumbnail is not simply a smaller version of fullsized)
Use Print Job Snapshot for item thumbnail - Normally the thumbnail for a print job is created by the smartlink app when the print job is saved. In a conversion context a smartlink is not used to create the print job, therefore the only thumbnail available is the one we were sent in the API request, which might either be missing or not be appropriate. Enabling this option adds an additional step to print job generation which causes print job generation to create a thumbnail for the print job, equivalent to if the print job had been created via a smartlink
